The Enugu State Police Command has named Inspector Joseph Ozonwanji as the officer involved in the fatal shooting of popular Ogene musician, Okezie Chikezie Mba, known as Igbo-Jah. The tragic incident occurred on October 25 at the Anti-Cult Unit of the police command in Enugu, where Igbo-Jah was attending an event.
According to initial police reports, Igbo-Jah was leaving the premises after what was described as a “friendly visit” when Inspector Ozonwanji allegedly discharged his firearm, fatally wounding the musician. Igbo-Jah was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The reasons for the inspector’s actions remain unclear, and he has since been taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation.
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has directed a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the shooting, while Police Commissioner Kanayo Uzuegbu visited the musician’s family on Saturday to express condolences. Commissioner Uzuegbu assured the family and the public that the investigation would be swift and thorough, with appropriate disciplinary action to follow if the inspector is found culpable. He emphasized that the Nigerian Police Force remains committed to accountability and urged the public to have confidence in the process.
The death of Igbo-Jah has sparked widespread grief and calls for justice, with the community awaiting the findings of the investigation into this high-profile incident.
