In a highly charged Europa League match, Fenerbahce and Manchester United battled to a 1-1 draw in Istanbul on Thursday night. The game saw an early goal from Christian Eriksen and a second-half equalizer by Youssef En-Nesyri, but the spotlight turned to Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho, who was sent off following a dispute with officials over a penalty appeal.

Manchester United took an early lead in the 15th minute when Christian Eriksen fired a first-time shot into the top corner after a well-set pass from Joshua Zirkzee. United’s defense held firm through the first half, thanks in part to a stunning double save from goalkeeper André Onana, who kept the scoreline intact as Fenerbahce pressed hard.

The home side came out energized after halftime, finding an equalizer just four minutes into the second period. Youssef En-Nesyri capitalized on an accurate cross from Allan Saint-Maximin, heading the ball past Onana from close range to bring the score to 1-1.

The turning point came in the 59th minute when Mourinho grew visibly upset over a penalty appeal that was waved off by referee Clement Turpin after Manuel Ugarte’s tackle on Fenerbahce’s Bright Osayi-Samuel. Heated exchanges followed, resulting in Mourinho being shown a red card and dismissed from the sideline. Post-match, Mourinho cryptically praised Turpin’s “incredible” decision-making, opting not to elaborate further.

Despite late pressure from both teams, neither could secure the winning goal. Manchester United’s woes deepened when substitute Antony had to be taken off on a stretcher, adding to the squad’s injury concerns.

The result leaves United winless in the Europa League this season, sitting mid-table with three points, while Fenerbahce maintains an unbeaten record and holds five points, placing them in a stronger position as group play continues.
