Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has approved a new minimum wage of ₦80,000 for state government workers, surpassing the national standard of ₦70,000. The announcement was made on Wednesday by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Ini Ememobong.
In a bid to ensure smooth implementation, Governor Eno has formed a committee led by the Head of the Civil Service. The committee, which includes key government officials and labor representatives, is tasked with developing an implementation plan within a month.
“This decision highlights the government’s commitment to the welfare of its workforce,” Ememobong said. He added that the increase reflects the governor’s dedication to improving workers’ living conditions and ensuring fair pay.
Akwa Ibom’s new minimum wage follows similar actions by other states like Lagos and Rivers, which have also approved minimum wages above the national threshold. The Lagos and Rivers state governments recently announced ₦85,000 as their new minimum wage, with plans for further increases.
This wage increase aligns with the federal government’s recent adjustment of the minimum wage to ₦70,000, signaling an ongoing trend of states taking proactive steps to address the economic challenges facing workers across Nigeria.
