Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has approved a new minimum wage of N75,000 for the state’s civil servants, making it one of the highest in the country. The decision, which surpasses the Federal Government’s agreed N72,000 minimum wage, was formalized in the presence of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, at the state house.
Governor Idris, who has a background as a former labour leader, emphasized his commitment to improving the welfare of workers in Kebbi. He expressed that, despite challenges faced by other states, Kebbi is determined to ensure fair pay for its civil servants. “This decision is about prioritizing our workers and ensuring they are fairly compensated for their hard work,” the governor said.
The new wage structure will be implemented immediately, with payments beginning within 72 hours of the signing. This increase follows extensive deliberations between the state government and the NLC, resulting in the higher wage agreement.
NLC President Ajaero commended Governor Idris for his leadership, noting that many other states are lagging behind despite receiving increased revenues. He called on other state governors to take similar action in improving civil servant pay. The event concluded with NLC leaders expressing their gratitude through solidarity chants.
This move marks a significant milestone for Kebbi State workers and sets a precedent for other states to follow in addressing wage concerns.
