Diego Forlán, the former Manchester United and Atlético Madrid striker, is making a surprising pivot to tennis as he prepares for his professional tennis debut at the Uruguay Open in November. The 45-year-old retired footballer, who played in the 2010 World Cup and was twice awarded the European Golden Shoe, will compete in the doubles event at the Challenger Tour clay-court tournament in Montevideo.
Forlán, who transitioned to tennis after retiring from football in 2019, has been active on the ITF World Tennis Masters Tour. This year, he has achieved notable success with a 73% win rate, reaching the quarterfinals at an MT1000 event in Lima and the finals of an M400 event in Asunción. Left-handed and determined to compete, Forlán will partner with world No. 101 Federico Coria of Argentina, after receiving a wild card entry.
Forlán expressed his enthusiasm about his tennis career: “I enjoy challenging myself, and tennis is a completely new competition for me. It’s great to travel and meet people from all over the world while pursuing this passion.”
Best known for his goal-scoring abilities on the football pitch, Forlán now aims to make a name for himself in the world of tennis, proving it’s never too late to pursue new dreams.
