Yulia Navalnaya, widow of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, has announced her intention to run for political office in Russia once Vladimir Putin’s regime ends. In an interview with the BBC, Navalnaya expressed her commitment to continuing her husband’s fight for democracy, stating that she is ready to stand as a candidate in future elections.
Navalnaya, currently living in exile in Germany, emphasized that she cannot return to Russia while Putin remains in power due to the risks of arrest and persecution. Her husband, Putin’s most vocal critic, died earlier this year in a Russian penal colony under mysterious circumstances, sparking global condemnation.
“I want to live in Russia, and I will return to participate in elections once Putin’s regime has fallen,” Navalnaya said. “My political opponent is Vladimir Putin, and I will do everything in my power to bring an end to his rule.”
Navalnaya criticized the international community for their weak response to her husband’s death, urging them to take a bolder stand against the Russian government. Despite the challenges ahead, she remains hopeful that a post-Putin Russia will see free and fair elections, and she plans to run for office when that time comes.
Her husband’s posthumous memoir, Patriot, will soon be released, chronicling his life as an opposition leader and his relentless battle against the Putin regime.
