Nigerian media personality, Toke Makinwa, has addressed and dismissed rumors that she secretly married her close friend, Farouk Umar, during her recent birthday thanksgiving celebration in Lagos.
Speculation began after pictures and videos from the event, held on Sunday, October 20, 2024, surfaced online, showing Makinwa and Farouk both dressed in white, with one video capturing Farouk affectionately kissing her neck. This fueled rumors of a secret engagement or wedding.
Social media quickly buzzed with congratulatory messages from fans, followers, and well-wishers. However, Makinwa took the opportunity during her afterparty to clear the air, categorically denying any marriage to Farouk.
“On Obasanjo’s internet, they said I got married to this guy. This guy is my best friend, ore mi. Farouk held me down when there was nobody, but we are not getting married,” Makinwa said.
Nollywood actress Dorcas Shola Fapson, who attended the event, also debunked the marriage rumors, clarifying that the celebration was simply a thanksgiving for Makinwa’s birthday.
Makinwa further reflected on her past, including her 2014 marriage and subsequent divorce from Maje Ayida, citing the challenges she overcame with the support of friends and her faith. She expressed gratitude for the strength to move forward and for the presence of those who stood by her during difficult times.
Makinwa ended by thanking God and her friends for their unwavering support, adding that Farouk remains her close friend, nothing more.
