Nigerian Army Refutes Acting Chief Appointment Rumors, Reaffirms Loyalty to Democracy

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has denied reports claiming the appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), clarifying that Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja remains in charge while on a scheduled annual leave.

In a statement released Monday, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Acting Director of Defence Information, dismissed the rumors, stating that there is no provision for an “acting” COAS within the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN). Gusau confirmed that Major General Abdulsalam Ibrahim is temporarily providing routine updates to the COAS, in accordance with standard military procedures.

Contrary to social media speculations about General Lagbaja’s health, Gusau affirmed that the COAS is in good health and will resume duties soon after his leave. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, had spoken to Lagbaja personally to confirm his well-being.

The DHQ urged media outlets and the public to verify information before spreading unverified news. It also issued a stern warning against those advocating for a military takeover, labeling such actions as treasonous. Gusau stressed that the Armed Forces remain fully committed to protecting Nigeria’s democracy and loyal to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He further highlighted the importance of the military’s role in maintaining the relative peace in the country, crediting President Tinubu’s strong support for the Armed Forces in carrying out their duties to safeguard the nation’s integrity.
