Ryan Kent Parts Ways with Fenerbahce After Fallout with Mourinho

Ryan Kent

Ryan Kent, the former Liverpool and Rangers winger, has had his contract with Fenerbahce terminated by mutual agreement, just 16 months into a four-year deal. His departure comes after a frustrating period with limited playing time and a reported breakdown in relations with manager Jose Mourinho.

Kent, 27, joined the Turkish side in July 2023 after leaving Rangers, hoping to make a fresh start in Turkey. However, his time at Fenerbahce was marked by setbacks, including a failed transfer to Lazio during the winter window and a lack of opportunities on the field. Mourinho had reportedly informed Kent that he would not play for the club again while the Portuguese coach remained in charge.

Fenerbahce confirmed Kent’s exit in an official statement: “The contract of Ryan Kent, one of the Professional Football A Team players, has been mutually terminated.”

Kent’s stint in Turkey saw him struggle for regular minutes. Last season, he made just one league start, with 144 minutes of total playing time and no goals or assists. His most notable contributions came in the Conference League, where he registered one assist across six appearances. This season, he played only once, featuring in a Champions League qualifier against Lugano in July.

Kent’s career started at Liverpool’s academy, and after promising loan spells at Coventry and Barnsley, he found his stride at Rangers under Steven Gerrard. At Rangers, he played a pivotal role in breaking Celtic’s dominance by helping secure the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership title. Kent’s performances earned him two selections in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year.

Despite his recent struggles, Kent remains a talented player with time to revive his career. Speculation suggests he could reunite with Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia. With his free-agent status, Kent now has the opportunity to find a new club where he can reignite his form and gain consistent playing time.
