A 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit Turkey’s eastern Malatya province on Wednesday morning at 10:46 a.m. local time, with its epicenter in the Kale district, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). While no casualties have been reported, three buildings partially collapsed, and several others were damaged.
The tremor was felt strongly across nearby provinces, including Adıyaman, Şanlıurfa, and Kahramanmaraş, as well as in northern Syrian regions like Aleppo, Hasakah, and Deir al-Zor. Following the quake, residents in affected areas evacuated homes and gathered in open spaces for safety.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that around 190 people received medical care, mostly for panic-related issues, with 43 still under observation. “We are closely monitoring the situation. Emergency teams remain on high alert for aftershocks,” Yerlikaya said.
Governors from Adıyaman, Şanlıurfa, and Kahramanmaraş assured the public that no major damage had been reported in their regions. Inspections are ongoing, with emergency units from AFAD, police, and gendarmerie actively conducting field assessments across affected areas.
Türkiye sits on active fault lines and experiences frequent earthquakes. Authorities urged citizens to stay cautious and follow safety instructions as they continue monitoring aftershocks.
