Game Freak, the renowned developer of the Pokémon series, has confirmed a significant data breach that exposed the personal details of over 2,600 employees and sensitive game-related information. The breach, which occurred in August 2024, has led to the unauthorized release of confidential documents, including game source code, unreleased designs, and prototypes of past Pokémon titles.
In a statement released on October 10, Game Freak acknowledged the breach, explaining that the attack resulted from “unauthorized access to our servers by a third party.” The company expressed regret for the incident and assured that the affected server had been rebuilt. Game Freak is now contacting impacted employees and strengthening security measures to prevent future breaches.
While the company addressed the leak of personal employee data, it did not comment on the widespread online circulation of confidential Pokémon game material, which includes full game builds and designs from previous projects. Reports from online communities suggest that little information on future Pokémon titles was exposed, apart from codenames and basic details.
Game Freak, a key partner alongside Nintendo and The Pokémon Company in managing the Pokémon franchise, is also developing the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A, set for release in 2025. Neither Nintendo nor The Pokémon Company has commented on the breach so far.
This incident has raised alarms within the gaming community, particularly concerning the security of intellectual property for one of the most valuable entertainment franchises in the world.
