Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has addressed speculation regarding his daughter’s new role and rumors about his remarriage following the death of his wife, Pastor Patience Eno. Speaking during a condolence visit from Senate President Godswill Akpabio and President Bola Tinubu’s wife, Oluremi Tinubu, the governor clarified that his daughter, Mrs. Helen Obareki, will coordinate the activities of the Office of the First Lady but is not being named First Lady.
Governor Eno emphasized that appointing his daughter was a practical decision to continue the projects his late wife had initiated through the Office of the First Lady, including her pet project, the Golden Initiative For All (GIFA). He explained that Helen had worked closely with her mother and was the best person to ensure the continuity of the programs. “It’s not about political expediency,” Eno said, “but a natural outcome to keep her mother’s legacy alive.”
He also dismissed rumors of taking a second wife, humorously adding that he didn’t have the money for a bride price. “No one will be able to fill the vacuum left by my wife, and her legacy will live in our hearts,” Eno stated.
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu endorsed Helen’s appointment, describing it as a common practice in other countries to preserve legacies. She assured Helen of her support, expressing confidence in her ability to continue her mother’s work.
Governor Eno made it clear that Helen’s role is as a coordinator, not a new First Lady, calling for public understanding and respect for his family’s privacy during their period of mourning.
