Panathinaikos Defender George Baldock Tragically Drowns at Home in Athens

George Baldock, 31, defender for Panathinaikos and the Greece national team, tragically drowned in the swimming pool at his home in Glyfada, Athens, on Wednesday. Emergency services attempted to revive Baldock, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed there was no foul play involved.

Baldock’s family issued a heartfelt statement, confirming the drowning and expressing their deep sorrow. “We are heartbroken by the sudden loss of George, a beloved father, fiancé, son, and friend,” the statement read. Baldock was due to fly home to celebrate his son’s first birthday.

Baldock, who signed with Panathinaikos this summer after a successful seven-year career at Sheffield United, made four appearances for the Greek club. His passing has shocked the football community, with tributes pouring in from former clubs, teammates, and fans. A moment of silence was held before Greece’s Nations League match against England, with players wearing black armbands in his honor.

Panathinaikos and the Hellenic Football Federation also expressed their grief, stating, “We mourn the loss of a beloved teammate. George will always be remembered.”
