Greece stunned England with a dramatic 2-1 win at Wembley in the Nations League, thanks to a last-minute strike from Vangelis Pavlidis. This marks Greece’s first-ever victory against England and solidifies their lead in Group B2.
Pavlidis opened the scoring in the 49th minute, skillfully bypassing England’s defenders to score a low shot past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Greece had several goals disallowed for offside but remained the stronger side throughout the match. England, despite a star-studded lineup, struggled to find form. Jude Bellingham equalized with a powerful shot in the 87th minute, briefly lifting the hopes of the home fans.
However, Greece had the final say when Pavlidis struck again in stoppage time, taking advantage of England’s defensive errors. The result leaves Greece atop Group B2 with a perfect nine points, while England, now three points behind, faces mounting pressure on interim manager Lee Carsley.
“We gave everything tonight and deserved the win,” said Pavlidis, who dedicated the victory to former teammate George Baldock, who passed away earlier in the week. England’s captain, John Stones, admitted, “We didn’t perform as expected, and they punished us.”
This unexpected defeat raises questions about Carsley’s future as England’s manager, as his experimental lineup failed to deliver.
