The Action Peoples Party (APP) has won 22 out of 23 chairmanship seats in the recently held Rivers State local government elections. The results were announced on Saturday by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) at its headquarters in Port Harcourt.
The RSIEC chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), confirmed that results from Etche Local Government Area are still pending due to ongoing collation, while the outcomes for all 319 councillorship positions will be declared once the process is complete.
Despite earlier tensions, including a court order barring the police from providing security and preventing INEC from releasing the voter register, the elections proceeded peacefully across 6,866 polling units. Enebeli praised the election process, describing it as “smooth, fair, and violence-free.” He commended the political parties and the people of Rivers State for their commitment to a peaceful election.
Major political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), did not participate in the election. However, the APP emerged victorious, with chairmanship wins in most local government areas.
Among the winners were Vincent Reuben Obu (Abua/Odual), Chibudom Ezu (Ahoada-East), Iyekor Ikporo (Ahoada-West), Tonye Oniyide (Akuku-Toru), Lazarus Gogote Nteogwuile (Andoni), and Enyiada Cookey-Gam (Opobo/Nkoro).
Though the election day was largely peaceful, there was an early morning explosion at the APC secretariat in Port Harcourt, damaging the building’s gate and several windows. Despite the incident, the election continued smoothly, and the APP’s overwhelming victory was announced.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who had vowed to proceed with the election despite the tensions, praised the electoral process, calling it a success for democracy in the state.
