Manchester United’s tough start to the Premier League season continued with a lackluster 0-0 draw against Aston Villa on Sunday, leaving Erik ten Hag’s side in 14th place with just eight points from their opening seven games. The result marks United’s worst start to a Premier League campaign in their history.

In a game with few highlights, United’s best chance came in the 68th minute when captain Bruno Fernandes struck the crossbar from a well-taken free-kick. Aston Villa, who had been unbeaten in their previous five league games, nearly snatched a late winner in stoppage time when Jaden Philogene’s shot was blocked by Diogo Dalot.

Villa’s Morgan Rogers looked lively in the first half, but failed to convert any of his attacking runs into clear scoring opportunities. United’s Marcus Rashford had a couple of early efforts saved by Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez, but the game lacked the attacking quality both teams needed.

Defensively, Manchester United managed to secure their first clean sheet in four matches, helped by a solid performance from veteran Jonny Evans. However, injuries to Harry Maguire and Villa’s Ezri Konsa added to the frustrations of both teams. Villa’s defensive strength, even with Konsa’s early exit, saw them hold firm to secure the draw.

The draw leaves Aston Villa in fifth place, maintaining their strong start to the season. Meanwhile, Manchester United, despite the clean sheet, continue to struggle, with growing questions over their direction under Erik ten Hag. As United head into the international break, they are already 10 points adrift of their rivals at the top of the table.

Villa, who have been in good form, will be relieved to remain unbeaten in their last six Premier League matches. For United, this result highlights ongoing concerns with creativity and attacking efficiency as they look to find a way to revive their season.
