Lille pulled off a stunning 1-0 victory over defending European champions Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, with Jonathan David scoring the decisive penalty just before halftime. The penalty was awarded after a VAR review found Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga guilty of handball during a free-kick.

Lille dominated much of the match, creating several opportunities in a high-intensity first half. David came close to scoring earlier but was denied by Real’s backup goalkeeper, Andriy Lunin. The French side’s relentless pressure and solid defense set the stage for their famous win.

Real Madrid introduced big names like Kylian Mbappé and Luka Modric in the second half to try to turn the tide, but Lille’s defense, led by the outstanding Lucas Chevalier in goal, stood firm. Chevalier made a string of key saves, particularly in the closing stages, and was instrumental in keeping the visitors from equalizing.

Despite some late chances, including two goal-line clearances, Real Madrid couldn’t break through. This marks their first defeat in all competitions since January. Manager Carlo Ancelotti acknowledged Lille’s deserved victory, criticizing his team’s lack of intensity and poor ball control throughout the game.

The result leaves Real Madrid with three points from their first two matches, following their earlier win over VfB Stuttgart, while Lille celebrated one of their biggest European nights at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
