Antoine Griezmann, one of France’s most accomplished footballers, has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 33. The Atletico Madrid forward, who played a key role in leading France to victory in the 2018 World Cup, shared the news in an emotional video on social media.
Griezmann earned 137 caps for France and scored 44 goals during his decade-long international career. Reflecting on his journey, he said, “After 10 incredible years marked by challenges, successes, and unforgettable moments, it is time for me to turn the page and make way for the next generation.”
Debuting in 2014 under coach Didier Deschamps, Griezmann quickly became a vital player for Les Bleus. He was instrumental in France’s 2018 World Cup triumph, scoring in the final as they defeated Croatia 4-2. He also led France to a Nations League title in 2021 and was the top scorer at Euro 2016, where France finished as runners-up.
Griezmann’s final match for France came in the Euro 2024 semi-finals, where they were eliminated by Spain. Despite the disappointment, Griezmann leaves behind an illustrious legacy. France manager Didier Deschamps praised him as “one of the greatest players in French football history,” while teammate Kylian Mbappé called him “a crucial figure who shaped our success.”
Griezmann’s decision marks the end of an era for France, but his contributions, both on and off the pitch, will forever be remembered. “Wearing this jersey was an honour and a privilege,” he said in his farewell, closing the chapter on an extraordinary international career.
