Lionel Messi’s equalizer saved Inter Miami from defeat in a 1-1 draw against Charlotte FC on Saturday night at Chase Stadium. Despite dominating much of the game, Miami had to settle for their third consecutive draw, keeping their lead atop the Eastern Conference.

Charlotte FC took the lead in the 57th minute when Karol Swiderski’s long-range shot found the back of the net. Ten minutes later, Messi responded with a left-footed strike from the edge of the box, leveling the match for Inter Miami. Marcelo Weigandt provided the assist following a corner kick.

Miami had opportunities to secure a win, with Luis Suarez coming close in stoppage time, but his shot sailed over the bar. The result keeps Inter Miami firmly in first place with 65 points, eight ahead of second-place Columbus Crew, who also drew their match. A win in their next game against Columbus on Wednesday would all but secure the Supporters’ Shield for Miami, granting them home-field advantage in the playoffs.

Despite the frustration of another draw, Miami coach Tata Martino remained positive: “We had chances to win, but it’s part of the game. We’re still in control, and the Supporters’ Shield is within reach.”

Inter Miami controlled the majority of possession, particularly in the first half, but failed to convert several key chances. Messi and Suarez, along with teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, kept the pressure on Charlotte throughout the match. Suarez missed two close chances, while Messi’s earlier shots were saved by Charlotte goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina.

With Messi’s 15th goal of the season and Miami remaining unbeaten in their last five matches, the team looks forward to securing their place at the top of MLS standings.
