Newcastle United earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against reigning Premier League champions Manchester City at St. James’ Park, with Anthony Gordon’s penalty securing a point for the hosts.
Manchester City, missing key players Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri, took the lead in the 35th minute when Josko Gvardiol turned and finished beautifully in the box, putting the visitors ahead in a scrappy first half. City appeared to have control, but Newcastle’s defense stayed strong, with limited chances for City’s top scorer Erling Haaland.
Newcastle came out stronger after halftime and leveled the score in the 58th minute. Anthony Gordon won a penalty after being fouled by City goalkeeper Ederson, who received a yellow card. Gordon calmly converted the spot kick, sending Ederson the wrong way and making it 1-1.
Both teams pressed for a winner in a frantic second half, but City struggled to find their usual rhythm without Rodri’s stabilizing presence in midfield. Bernardo Silva came close for City in added time, but his powerful volley was denied by a sharp save from Newcastle’s goalkeeper, Nick Pope.
Newcastle had another penalty appeal waved off when Joelinton went down under pressure from Kyle Walker, but the referee saw no foul.
City manager Pep Guardiola acknowledged that his team made poor decisions when trying to extend their lead, praising Pope for making crucial saves. Despite extending their unbeaten run, City now faces back-to-back draws and a potential drop from the top spot depending on the weekend’s other results.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe praised his side’s resilience, particularly Gordon’s energy and leadership in attack. With both teams earning a point, City remain provisionally top of the table, while Newcastle stay in fifth place.
