Veteran Nigerian actress Toyin Adegbola, also known as Toyin Tomato, has ignited heated debates after advising women to remain with unfaithful husbands rather than opting for divorce. During an Instagram live session, the 62-year-old actress encouraged women to prioritize family unity and warned that leaving a marriage could bring regret later, especially during important family events.
Adegbola explained that women should protect themselves from sexually transmitted diseases if their husbands are unfaithful, recounting a story of a friend who regularly buys condoms for her husband. “No matter how terrible your husband is, don’t think of chasing him out. You’ll regret it when your children have an important event. Once you leave, no single man will marry you,” she stated.
The actress, who rose to fame in the Yoruba film industry, also stressed that equality doesn’t exist in marriage, noting that women should accept certain realities. “We don’t have equal rights, and I will continue to say this,” she said, while urging men to treat their wives as their “first child” in the relationship, adding that men can be “foolish” despite their wisdom.
Her comments quickly sparked outrage on social media, with many criticizing her stance for downplaying the seriousness of infidelity and reinforcing outdated gender roles. Others supported her, agreeing that preserving the family structure is important.
Toyin Adegbola, a veteran actress, has had a prolific career since starting in 1984 and is known for her roles in popular films like Asewo to re Mecca (1992) and Shadow Parties (2021). Her personal experiences, as well as her roles in numerous films, have greatly influenced her views on relationships and marriage.
