Tinubu Hails Okpebholo’s Victory in Edo Governorship Election, Urges Unity and Legal Redress for Disputes

Tinubu Hails Okpebholo's Victory

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on his victory in the Edo State governorship election, urging him to focus on uniting the state and serving all citizens.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Okpebholo the winner after he secured 291,667 votes, defeating Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who received 247,274 votes. Labour Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata, finished third with 22,763 votes.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu lauded the efforts of APC leaders, particularly in Edo State, for their role in the victory. He emphasized that the result reflects the people’s trust in the APC’s vision for progress and economic reform.

However, Tinubu urged Okpebholo not to celebrate excessively but to take this victory as a “call to service.” He encouraged him to work towards healing any divisions and reaching out to his political rivals for the betterment of Edo State.

The President also commended the peaceful conduct of the election and praised the other candidates for their role in deepening Nigeria’s democracy. He advised any aggrieved parties to seek resolution through legal means, reinforcing the importance of stability in Nigeria’s democratic processes.

Additionally, Tinubu acknowledged the efforts of INEC and security agencies in ensuring a smooth and largely incident-free election, stating that the process reflected Nigeria’s growing democratic maturity.

He concluded by applauding the people of Edo State for their peaceful participation and reaffirmed the need for elected officials to honor the mandate by delivering effective governance.
