Miley Cyrus is being sued for copyright infringement, with Tempo Music Investments alleging that her 2023 hit “Flowers” illegally borrows elements from Bruno Mars’ 2013 song “When I Was Your Man.” The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles federal court, claims that “Flowers” mirrors significant musical aspects of Mars’ track, including melody, harmony, and chord progressions.

Tempo Music, which owns part of the rights to “When I Was Your Man,” asserts that the similarities are too striking to be coincidental. The lawsuit accuses Cyrus and her co-writers, Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack, of creating a “derivative work” without authorization. While Bruno Mars himself is not a plaintiff, the lawsuit seeks financial compensation and aims to block further performances or distribution of “Flowers.”

“Flowers” has been a massive success, earning Cyrus a Grammy and topping the charts worldwide, but Tempo Music argues that its success is built on unauthorized elements from Mars’ song. The legal battle could potentially disrupt the continued success of Cyrus’ hit.
