Nollywood has lost one of its legends, veteran actor Emmanuel France, whose death was announced on Monday, September 16, 2024. The acclaimed actor, known for his roles in films such as Cross My Sin, She Is My Sister, and The Director, was celebrated for his contributions to both Nigerian and Ghanaian cinema. He was believed to be in his 80s.
Nigerian filmmaker Olufemi Ogedengbe confirmed the news via Instagram, sharing heartfelt memories of working with the late actor. “Rest in peace to one of Nollywood’s legends, Uncle Emmanuel France. We shot three movies together in 2006. R.I.P,” Ogedengbe wrote.
Though the cause of death remains unknown, tributes have poured in from fans and colleagues, remembering France for his immense talent and dedication to the craft.
Emmanuel France’s career began in Ghana in the 1960s, where he worked with the Ghana Film Corporation. However, he was better known in Nigeria, having spent much of his life there and holding a Nigerian passport. In a 2011 interview, France expressed his unique identity, stating, “I am not even a Ghanaian but a ‘Gold Coastian’… I have a Nigerian passport because I was born in Nigeria.”
France joins a growing list of Nollywood stars who have passed away this year, including Ganiyu ‘Ogunjimi’ Oyeyemi, Tolani Quadri Oyebamiji (Sisi Quadri), Junior Pope, Amaechi Muonagor, John Okafor (Mr. Ibu), and Dayo Adewunmi (Sule Suebebe).
His death leaves a significant void in Nollywood, where his presence will be sorely missed, but his legacy as a versatile and dedicated actor will continue to inspire generations to come.
