Darlington Michaels, the beloved South African actor known for his iconic role as Georgie “Papa G” Zamdela in Isidingo, has died at the age of 78. He passed away on Friday, September 13, 2024, after a brief illness, as confirmed by his family.
Michaels gained widespread fame for his portrayal of the flamboyant gangster, Papa G, when he joined the Isidingo cast in 1997. His character, known for speaking Tsotsitaal and wearing bold silk shirts and chunky gold rings, became a fan favorite over the show’s two-decade run.
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) expressed deep sorrow over his passing, praising his immense contribution to the entertainment industry. “His legacy will be remembered for years to come,” the broadcaster said.
Michaels’ career spanned decades, beginning on stage under the mentorship of South African theatre icon Gibson Kente. He made a name for himself with his 1984 play Survival, which addressed the harsh realities of apartheid-era prisons.
Though he suffered a stroke in 2013, Michaels made a triumphant return to television in 2020 in the drama series Vula Vala. Despite health challenges, he expressed joy in continuing his acting career.
Michaels is survived by his wife, two children, six grandchildren, and legions of fans who will forever remember him as Papa G.
