Nigeria’s Bose Omolayo continued her impressive Paralympic career by winning a silver medal in the women’s 79kg para powerlifting event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Omolayo, who had previously clinched gold in the same category at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, lifted 145kg to finish second.
China’s Han Miayou set a new world record with a 154kg lift to take gold, while Egypt’s Safaa Hassan claimed bronze with a 139kg lift.
This silver medal marks Omolayo’s third consecutive Paralympic podium finish, solidifying her status as one of Nigeria’s most successful athletes. Despite facing challenges during the competition, including an injury to her right arm, Omolayo’s early successful lift ensured she secured a medal for her country.
Nigeria’s para-powerlifting team has been a standout at the Games, historically dominating the event with a total of 24 gold, 16 silver, and 14 bronze medals before Paris 2024. With Omolayo’s silver, Nigeria’s medal tally in para-powerlifting at this Paralympics now stands at three, including a gold and two silver.
The nation is hopeful for more success as Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Folashade Olwafemiayo and Loveline Obiji, another seasoned Paralympic champion, are set to compete in the women’s +86kg and 86kg categories. Obiji, a two-time Paralympic medallist, will be aiming to add to her collection, having won gold in London 2016 and silver in Tokyo 2020.
