The Nigerian military has debunked viral videos alleging mass killings, abductions, and the capture of armoured vehicles by terrorists in Sokoto and Zamfara states. The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) clarified that the incidents shown in the videos occurred in a neighboring African country, not Nigeria.
In a statement on Monday, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, said that on August 29, 2024, troops of Operation Hadarin Daji were on a mission to disrupt a terrorist gathering at Kwashabawa Village in Zamfara State when two armoured vehicles became stuck in a swampy area due to heavy rains. To prevent these vehicles from falling into terrorist hands, the troops had to demobilize them.
Addressing the viral videos, General Buba emphasized that they are part of a propaganda effort by terrorists to mislead the public and undermine military achievements. One video falsely depicted a mass burial of civilians, which Buba confirmed took place outside Nigeria.
“The terrorist videos are designed to spread misinformation and create fear among Nigerians,” Buba said. “The claim of 150 people being abducted in Sokoto State is entirely false and was fabricated by terrorists to discredit the efforts of our troops.”
The military urged Nigerians to be cautious and not to fall for the misinformation and fake news propagated by terrorist groups. Buba reassured the public that the military remains focused on protecting the nation and will continue to combat terrorism despite the psychological warfare waged by these groups.
“Terrorists resorting to propaganda is not uncommon in war. The public must stay vigilant and avoid spreading false narratives that can undermine national security,” Buba added.
