Chidimma Adetshina, a 23-year-old law student, has been crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, just weeks after being forced to drop out of the Miss South Africa pageant due to controversy over her nationality. Born in Soweto and raised in Cape Town, Adetshina faced backlash in South Africa because her father is Nigerian and her mother has Mozambican roots, sparking debates about her eligibility in the Miss South Africa contest.

The situation escalated when the South African Home Affairs Department investigated allegations of “identity theft” involving Adetshina’s mother, though it was confirmed that Adetshina was not involved as she was an infant at the time. Amidst the growing media storm, Adetshina withdrew from the contest, citing concerns for her safety and well-being.

Adetshina was subsequently invited to compete in Miss Universe Nigeria, representing Taraba State. She accepted, describing it as a second chance to achieve her pageantry dreams. At the grand finale in Lagos, she was crowned the winner and will now represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe competition in November.

Her victory has received widespread support from fans across Africa, praising her resilience. However, some critics accused the contest of favoritism, arguing she had an unfair advantage. Despite the mixed reactions, Adetshina remains focused on her goal, stating that this opportunity aligns with her long-held dreams of becoming a beauty queen on the international stage.
