A potential deal between the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and German coach Bruno Labbadia to take charge of the Super Eagles has fallen through due to complications with German tax laws. The agreement, which was close to being finalized, unraveled after it became clear that the NFF would be required to cover an additional 32% to 40% of Labbadia’s salary to satisfy German tax obligations.
NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau explained that while the federation was willing to be flexible, they could not shoulder the significant additional tax burden. Despite reaching an agreement in principle, the deal was ultimately canceled when Labbadia insisted that the NFF pay the full tax amount.
In light of this development, Augustine Eguavoen, the NFF’s Technical Director, will take over as head coach for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches. Eguavoen will lead the Super Eagles against Benin Republic on September 7th in Uyo and Rwanda on September 10th in Kigali. This will be Eguavoen’s fourth tenure as the head of the Nigerian national team, following previous stints in 2005-2007, 2010, and 2022.
