Thibaut Courtois Rejects Belgium National Team Return Amid Tensions with Coach Tedesco

Real Madrid’s star goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, has declared that he will not rejoin the Belgium national team as long as Domenico Tedesco remains the head coach. Courtois, who played a pivotal role in Real Madrid’s Champions League triumph last season, was noticeably absent from Belgium’s Euro 2024 squad. This absence was not due to injury but stemmed from a fallout with Tedesco, which has now led to Courtois’ decision to step back from international duty.

In a statement posted on social media, Courtois, who has made 102 appearances for Belgium, revealed his reluctance to return under the current management. He acknowledged his role in the strained relationship but emphasized that his lack of confidence in Tedesco would undermine the team’s cohesion and atmosphere. The rift between the two became public in 2023 when Courtois left the national squad during a Euro 2024 qualifier, reportedly over dissatisfaction with team leadership decisions.

Courtois expressed regret over disappointing fans but stressed that this decision is in the best interest of both himself and the national team. For Real Madrid, this development may be seen as a positive, as Courtois will now have additional rest during international breaks, allowing him to focus entirely on his club career. This is particularly beneficial as Courtois recently returned from a serious knee injury that sidelined him for much of the previous season.

Belgium’s disappointing performance at Euro 2024, where they were eliminated by France in the round of 16, has added to the scrutiny of Tedesco’s leadership. Despite the ongoing debate about the team’s direction, Courtois remains resolute in his decision, leaving the door open only if there’s a change in the national team’s management. At 32, Courtois still has several years left at the top level, but for now, his focus remains solely on Real Madrid.
