Disgraced Former Congressman George Santos Expected to Plead Guilty in Fraud Case

Former New York congressman George Santos, who was expelled from Congress in December 2023, is expected to plead guilty to a series of fraud charges linked to his 2022 election campaign, according to reports. Santos, who had previously maintained his innocence, faces 23 federal felony charges, including wire fraud, money laundering, and the misuse of campaign funds.

Santos’s short-lived political career was mired in scandal, with revelations that he fabricated significant portions of his résumé, including false claims about his education, work history, and family background. Despite the controversy, he initially managed to secure a congressional seat, flipping a key New York district.

The charges against Santos stem from allegations that he diverted campaign funds for personal luxuries such as high-end clothing, Botox treatments, and payments on the adult content platform OnlyFans. The situation further deteriorated following a damning House ethics report, which detailed his reckless financial behavior and misuse of donor money.

Santos, who was the first member of Congress to be expelled in over 20 years, is expected to appear in court on Monday in Central Islip, New York, where he is likely to enter a guilty plea as part of a deal with prosecutors. It remains unclear which specific charges he will plead guilty to, but the case could result in a significant prison sentence.
