Former World’s Heaviest Man Achieves Unprecedented 542 kg Weight Loss with Royal Support

Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari, once recognized as the heaviest man alive at 610 kg, has achieved a monumental weight loss of 542 kg, thanks to a life-saving intervention orchestrated by Saudi Arabia’s former King Abdullah. This remarkable transformation has not only altered the course of Khalid’s life but also stands as a testament to the power of medical science when combined with unwavering support.

In 2013, Khalid’s extreme obesity had rendered him bedridden for over three years, wholly dependent on his family and friends for basic needs. The severity of his condition prompted King Abdullah to take immediate action, arranging for Khalid’s transfer from his home in Jazan to King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh. This operation required specialized equipment, including a forklift and a custom-designed bed, underscoring the gravity of his situation.

Once under the care of a dedicated team of 30 medical professionals, Khalid underwent a comprehensive treatment plan. This included gastric bypass surgery, a tailored diet, an exercise regimen, and intensive physiotherapy, which collectively enabled him to lose nearly half of his body weight within just six months. Over the course of his treatment, Khalid’s weight dropped to 63 kg—a reduction so profound that he required multiple surgeries to remove excess skin, a typical consequence of such significant weight loss.

Today, Khalid is fondly referred to as “The Smiling Man,” a nickname bestowed by the medical staff who were deeply moved by his perseverance and positive spirit throughout this arduous journey. His story is not only one of personal triumph but also a powerful illustration of how targeted medical intervention, supported by committed healthcare professionals and compassionate leadership, can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
