Severe flooding in Jigawa State has resulted in the deaths of 16 people, the destruction of nearly 4,000 homes, and the displacement of thousands of residents. The flood, caused by continuous heavy rainfall, has impacted ten local government areas (LGAs) across the state.
Dr. Haruna Mariga, Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), confirmed the devastating toll. He reported that the fatalities were due to building collapses, drowning, and canoe accidents, while 3,936 homes were destroyed, leaving many families without shelter. Additionally, 2,744 hectares of farmland have been submerged, causing significant losses to local agriculture.
Victims of the flood have sought refuge in temporary shelters provided by SEMA, which has also distributed essential relief materials such as rice, maize, blankets, and mats to alleviate their suffering. However, the situation remains critical, with ongoing rainfall threatening to worsen the disaster.
The flooding has also disrupted vital infrastructure, cutting off major roads and hindering economic activities in the region. The state government has called on residents to remain cautious and adhere to safety measures to prevent further casualties.
Authorities are working tirelessly to provide support to affected communities, with efforts focused on delivering aid and ensuring that displaced families receive the assistance they need to rebuild their lives.
