GTBank Confirms Attempted Website Breach, Assures Customers of Data Security

Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) has confirmed an attempted breach of its website, addressing widespread concerns and clarifying that no customer data was compromised. The bank’s website experienced a temporary disruption following the renewal of its domain name, leading to media reports and online speculation that hackers had seized and cloned the site.

In a statement released on Thursday, GTBank emphasized that while there was an isolated attempt to breach the website domain, the site was not cloned, and all customer data remains secure. The bank reassured customers that it does not store sensitive information on its website, effectively ruling out any risk of data compromise.

The statement read: “Our attention has been drawn to reports in the media alleging that hackers have seized the Bank’s website, cloned it and intercepted customer data.

“While there was an isolated incident of an attempt to compromise our website domain, we would like to assure all our Customers and Stakeholders that the Bank’s website has not been cloned and that we do not store customer information on our website, and as such, there has been no instance of compromise of customer data.

“Our dedicated team of Information Security Experts are currently working round the clock to restore domain settings, and we can assure our customers that our website will be up shortly.

“We urge all our Customers to please disregard the claims in these media reports and assure you of our unwavering commitment to safeguarding customer data.”

GTBank also highlighted that its Information Security team is working diligently to restore full website functionality and address the domain settings. Despite the temporary disruption, the bank’s mobile applications on Android and iOS continued to operate normally, ensuring uninterrupted access for customers.

The incident, which occurred shortly after the bank renewed its domain name, underscores the increasing threat of cyberattacks on financial institutions. However, GTBank reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining robust security measures and urged customers to disregard the inaccurate reports circulating online.

GTBank’s swift response to the incident has helped to maintain customer confidence, as the bank continues to prioritize the security of its digital platforms in an evolving cyber landscape.
