Adesina Ogunlana, a respected activist and former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikeja Branch, has passed away at the age of 60. Ogunlana, renowned for his passionate advocacy for justice and human rights, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, just days after celebrating his milestone birthday.
Ogunlana, affectionately known as “Serubawon” (a Yoruba term meaning “frighten the oppressors”), was a formidable figure in Nigeria’s legal and civic spheres. His tenure as NBA Ikeja Chairman from 2016 to 2018 was marked by a vigorous defense of the rule of law and active participation in protests against government policies he viewed as unjust. Notably, he led the NBA’s opposition to the 2018 Lagos State Land Use Charge and was a key figure in the #EndSARS movement, where he represented petitioners at the Lekki Tollgate inquiry.
The NBA Ikeja Branch, in a statement, expressed profound sadness at Ogunlana’s passing, acknowledging his indelible contributions to the legal profession and his unwavering commitment to the rights of the oppressed. The association noted that Ogunlana’s legacy of activism and his fearless pursuit of justice would continue to inspire generations.
Friends, colleagues, and admirers have flooded social media with tributes, celebrating Ogunlana’s life and his relentless fight for a better Nigeria. The burial arrangements will be announced by his family in due course.
Ogunlana’s passing leaves a significant void in the legal and activist communities, where his courage, dedication, and passion will be deeply missed.
