Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has imposed a 24-hour curfew following violent protests over economic hardships. The decision was announced on Thursday after an Emergency State Security Council meeting aimed at addressing the escalating violence.
According to Governor Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa, the curfew was unanimously agreed upon to restore order and ensure public safety. “The imposition of this curfew is a necessary measure to safeguard lives and preserve public and private property,” Tofa stated.
The protests, which began peacefully, were hijacked by thugs and hoodlums who looted businesses and government properties, including the newly built Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) Industrial Park. Videos circulating online show the building being set on fire and valuable equipment being stolen.
Governor Yusuf condemned the actions of the miscreants and called for unity among citizens. “Let us not allow the actions of a few selfish individuals to divide us. Together, we can overcome these challenges and build a stronger, more resilient Kano State,” he urged.
The governor emphasized the importance of compliance with the curfew for the safety and well-being of all residents. Security agencies have been directed to ensure full enforcement of the curfew, and citizens are advised to stay indoors.
In a statement, the governor also reassured the public of the government’s commitment to protecting lives and properties during this difficult time. He called on all residents to remain vigilant and work together to maintain peace and harmony in the state.
