Onyeka Onwenu, a celebrated Nigerian singer, actress, and journalist, has died at the age of 72. The iconic artist reportedly collapsed and died on Tuesday evening during the 80th birthday celebration of her friend, Chief Stella Okoli, the founder of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
Onwenu was immediately rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, where she was pronounced dead.
Born on January 31, 1952, and affectionately known as the “Elegant Stallion,” Onyeka Onwenu made significant contributions to music, film, and public service. Her illustrious career saw the release of influential albums such as “In The Morning Light” and “Dancing In The Sun.” She also starred in notable films including “Half of a Yellow Sun” and “Lionheart.”
Beyond her artistic achievements, Onwenu was appointed the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development by the Goodluck Jonathan administration in 2013, highlighting her dedication to societal advancement.
