Chief Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Iwuanyanwu, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has died at the age of 82. The Iwuanyanwu family announced his passing on July 25, 2024, after a brief illness.
In a heartfelt statement, the family shared their grief over the loss of their patriarch, affectionately known as “Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo.” The statement read, “The Iwuanyanwu family of Umuohii Atta, in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, announces the demise of our patriarch, Engr Chief Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Iwuanyanwu—Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo. Chief Iwuanyanwu died on Thursday, July 25, 2024, after a brief illness. He was aged 82.”
Chief Iwuanyanwu was a towering figure in Nigerian public life, renowned for his leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a major socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people. He also served as President of the Owerri Peoples Assembly, where his efforts were marked by a steadfast commitment to the unity and progress of the Igbo community.
Prominent figures from across Nigeria have paid tribute to Chief Iwuanyanwu, highlighting his vast contributions to various sectors. Senators Orji Kalu, Enyinnaya Abaribe, Theodore Orji, and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Ben Kalu all expressed deep sorrow and praised his enduring legacy.
Senator Orji Kalu described Chief Iwuanyanwu as a patriotic elder statesman and selfless leader, saying, “The late eminent businessman and politician was passionate about the growth and progress of Nigeria and will be remembered for his good deeds and worthy legacies.”
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe echoed these sentiments, calling Iwuanyanwu a patriot and a progressive leader who championed infrastructural development in the Old Imo State. “Chief Iwuanyanwu was an all-rounder, dedicated to responsibilities that benefited all, irrespective of tribe or religion,” he said.
Deputy Speaker Ben Kalu referred to Iwuanyanwu as an “iroko that has fallen in Igbo land,” highlighting his immense contributions to Nigeria’s socio-economic development through his business ventures and philanthropic efforts.
Former governor and senator, Chief Theodore Orji, also expressed profound sadness, acknowledging Iwuanyanwu’s significant contributions to politics, business, and humanitarian efforts. “I feel for the family, the state, Ndigbo, and Nigeria at large,” he said.
Born in 1942, Chief Iwuanyanwu was a successful engineer, businessman, and philanthropist. He founded Hardel and Enic Construction Company, one of Nigeria’s first indigenous construction companies, playing a pivotal role in the nation’s infrastructure development. His diverse interests included investments in media, sports, and education, reflecting his commitment to national progress. As a philanthropist, he supported numerous educational and healthcare initiatives, earning widespread respect and admiration.
Chief Iwuanyanwu is survived by his wife, Lady Princess Frances Iwuanyanwu, and numerous children and grandchildren, including Dr. Mrs. Nwadiuto Iheakanwa, Managing Director of Champion Group of Newspapers. The family stated that burial arrangements will be announced after consultations, in respect of traditional protocols and community involvement.
Chief Iwuanyanwu’s passing marks the end of a remarkable career in public service and leadership, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to the unity and progress of the Igbo community and Nigeria as a whole.
