Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Communications and Strategy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has responded robustly to defamation claims made by Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election. Onanuga declared his readiness to confront Obi’s legal challenge in court.
In a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Onanuga stated, “I am still waiting for the letter from Peter Obi’s lawyer threatening a N5 billion suit and demanding an apology to Peter Obi over the planned ‘revolution.’ Let me just tell Obi and his lawyer: I am not afraid of any legal action. We shall meet in court.”
Obi’s legal team has initiated a lawsuit against Onanuga, demanding a retraction and N5 billion in damages for what they allege to be a defamatory publication that has significantly harmed Obi’s reputation. The controversy stems from a statement Onanuga made on X, accusing Obi’s supporters of planning protests in Nigeria and holding Obi responsible for potential unrest. This accusation was widely shared across social media and various Nigerian news outlets.
The escalating legal battle highlights the tensions and high stakes involved in Nigerian politics, with both parties prepared to defend their positions vigorously in court.
Obi’s legal counsel, Chief Alex Ejesieme, SAN, had refuted the allegations from Bayo Onanuga, describing them as “false and malicious.”
