Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, endured their second consecutive defeat in pre-Olympics friendlies, losing 70-62 to Serbia on Sunday, July 21.
Coached by Rena Wakama, D’Tigress started the match with determination, hoping to rebound from their previous 77-63 loss to Germany. Despite their efforts, they ended the first quarter trailing by 6 points, 21-15.
The second quarter saw Serbia widening the gap, finishing the half with a 10-point lead at 39-29. In the third quarter, Serbia continued to dominate, maintaining a 10-point margin at 55-45, putting D’Tigress under pressure to mount a comeback.
In the fourth quarter, Nigeria’s perseverance was evident as they worked hard to narrow the deficit. However, Serbia managed to hold onto their lead, securing the victory with a final score of 70-62.
This loss marks D’Tigress’ second in a row as they prepare for their final pre-Olympics friendly against Japan on Wednesday, July 24.
Ahead of the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, D’Tigress will make their third appearance at the games after debuting at Athens 2004 and qualifying for Tokyo 2020.
At both tournaments, Nigeria failed to go beyond the group stages.
