Lionel Messi, fresh off winning his record 45th major career trophy with Argentina’s 2024 Copa América victory, was honored by Inter Miami CF in a special pre-match ceremony on Saturday night. Ahead of Inter Miami’s 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire at Chase Stadium, club president Jorge Mas presented Messi with a commemorative picture highlighting his achievements with FC Barcelona, PSG, Inter Miami, and the Argentine national team.
“Tonight, we celebrate a great milestone for our captain Leo Messi in becoming the footballer who has lifted the most trophies in the history of the sport,” said Mas. “And I am sure he won’t stop at 45; we hope he can lift more in the future.”
Messi, currently sidelined with an ankle injury from Argentina’s Copa final victory over Colombia, made an appearance wearing a protective boot. Despite his injury, he received a tremendous ovation from the fans, many of whom had hoped to see him on the field in Inter Miami’s signature pink jersey.
Messi’s leadership and influence have been instrumental for Inter Miami. “What Lionel Messi has done as a leader is that he elevates everyone around him and is an example for the young players in the Inter Miami youth academy,” Mas added.
The injury has kept Messi off the field, but he is expected to return soon to help Inter Miami defend their Leagues Cup title as the tournament begins this week. In his absence, Inter Miami remains at the top of the Supporters’ Shield standings with 53 points, holding a five-point lead over FC Cincinnati.
Messi’s recent Copa América victory was not without controversy. After the win, Argentina teammate Enzo Fernandez was caught singing a racist chant on the team bus, leading to backlash and calls for an apology. Messi, who was not present during the incident, has yet to comment publicly on the matter.
As Messi continues his recovery, his impact on and off the field remains significant. Inter Miami and the football world look forward to his return, with hopes that he will continue to add to his already remarkable legacy.
