Carlos Alcaraz battled back from a set down to defeat Tommy Paul in the Wimbledon quarter-finals, winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. The world No. 3 will now face Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals, who earlier stunned top seed Jannik Sinner in a five-set thriller.
Paul started strong, breaking Alcaraz’s serve to take the first set. However, Alcaraz found his rhythm and responded with a break in the second set to level the match. The Spaniard’s intensity and precision increased, taking control of the third and fourth sets as Paul struggled to keep pace.
Alcaraz, with 36 winners and overcoming 19 break points saved by Paul, demonstrated resilience and strategic shot-making. Despite Paul’s valiant effort and remarkable shots, including an impressive one-handed backhand pass, Alcaraz’s consistency and power proved decisive.
Reflecting on his performance, Alcaraz said, “I had to stay strong mentally and find solutions. I’m happy with how I managed to turn it around.”
Alcaraz now prepares for a challenging semi-final against Medvedev, who triumphed over Sinner 6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3. Medvedev’s victory marks his return to the Wimbledon semi-finals for the second consecutive year.
“He’s a really great player,” Alcaraz said of Medvedev. “It’s the same semi-final as last year. Hopefully, I’m going to get the same result. I have to believe in myself and try to keep going if I want to beat him.”
Alcaraz aims to secure his fourth Grand Slam title and first major title defense at the All England Club.
