Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham is facing criticism after reporting trolls who cursed her for supporting President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 general election to the police for cyberbullying.
During the 2022 election campaign, Abraham expressed her support for Tinubu, believing in his ‘Renewed Hope’ action plans. However, since Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023, the country’s economy has struggled, with fuel prices soaring and the naira devaluing, pushing more Nigerians below the poverty line.
Abraham’s support for Tinubu has made her a target on social media, with many criticizing her choice. In response to the backlash, she stated she has moved on from politics to focus on her acting career and regrets being open about her political views. Despite her explanations, the attacks have not ceased, leading Abraham to take legal action against some of the trolls.
One particularly harsh comment wished harm upon Abraham’s son, prompting her to report the user to the police. Her spokesman clarified, “It is not an abuse of power; it’s a fight against cyberbullying. Everyone must understand that actions have consequences, especially online.”
In another incident, Abraham reported a user who accused her of using money from Tinubu for a hair transplant for her husband. This user was also arrested for cyberbullying.
Abraham has faced accusations of arresting an X user’s mother, which she denies. In a live Instagram session on July 10, 2024, she clarified that she had not arrested anyone’s mother but had filed a petition against those who defamed her. She expressed frustration and distress over the backlash, stating that she had only exercised her democratic rights and had been unfairly targeted.
Abraham alleges that people have been paid to ruin her career and life, but she remains unafraid, insisting she has committed no crimes. She emphasized her resolve to fight back against those who have bullied and defamed her, asserting her right to defend herself and her family.
