France secured their place in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory against Belgium, thanks to a late own goal by Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen. Despite dominating the match, France struggled to find the back of the net until the 85th minute when Randal Kolo Muani’s shot deflected off Vertonghen, sealing the win in Dusseldorf.
Throughout the game, France controlled possession and created numerous chances, with Marcus Thuram and Aurelien Tchouameni coming close to scoring. Kylian Mbappe also showed his skill with some dazzling footwork, although his finishing was off. Belgium had their moments, with Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne testing French goalkeeper Mike Maignan, but they could not capitalize.
Didier Deschamps’ side will now face either Portugal or Slovenia in the quarter-finals. The standout performer was Arsenal’s William Saliba, who effectively marked Lukaku and nearly scored himself. The only downside for France was Adrien Rabiot’s booking, which will see him suspended for the next match.
