Despite audio issues during his speech, Usher’s message resonated with the audience. He shared his struggles, including his father’s absence, and the impact it had on his life. “You have to have a forgiving heart to understand the true pitfalls and hardships of a Black man in America,” Usher said, urging fathers to stand up for their children.
Usher also highlighted his own role as a father, calling 2024 “the year of the father” and encouraging men to be role models for their sons and daughters. His speech was interspersed with tributes to those who supported his career, including producers Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, L.A. Reid, and Babyface.
The award was presented after a montage of Usher’s career highlights, including clips from his teenage years and his recent Super Bowl performance. An all-star tribute followed, featuring performances by Childish Gambino, Keke Palmer, and Summer Walker, each performing one of Usher’s songs.
Usher’s recognition at the BET Awards comes just months after his prestigious halftime show at the Super Bowl. The event also featured a performance by Will Smith, debuting his new single “You Can Make It,” inspiring the audience with his message of perseverance.
The BET Awards, celebrating Black talent across various industries, have been running since 2001, and this year’s event highlighted Usher’s enduring influence and contributions to music and culture.
