Ibrahim Ogohi, Nigeria’s first naval officer to become Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has passed away at the age of 76. Ogohi died on Sunday morning at his home in Abuja after battling an illness associated with old age for several weeks.
A funeral prayer session will be held at the national mosque in Abuja, after which his body will be transported to his hometown of Okura-Lafia in Dekina LGA, Kogi State, for burial.
Ogohi served as CDS from 1999 to 2003, appointed by then-President Olusegun Obasanjo. He was the first naval officer to reach the rank of four-star general in Nigeria’s military. Ogohi joined the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) in 1968 and received training in India, the UK, France, and the US.
Throughout his distinguished career, Ogohi held various positions, including watchkeeping duties on the Nigeria Navy Ship (NNS) Enugu, gunnery and navigation officer in Ibadan, laboratory officer at the naval armament depot Kirikiri, and executive officer at NNS Akaso in Port Harcourt. He also served as commanding officer at NNS Eken in France and the NDA’s naval wing. Later, he was promoted to director administrator at the NDA, chief of plans at the naval headquarters, and flag officer commanding the western naval command.
