Celine Dion’s new documentary, “I Am: Celine Dion,” offers an intimate look at her life and challenges with stiff-person syndrome, a rare and chronic neurological disorder. The film, available on Prime Video, includes powerful scenes of medical trauma, such as Dion experiencing a seizure.
Despite these challenges, Dion remains resilient and dedicated to her career. At the documentary’s premiere, she expressed that her passion as a performer will never disappear and that her illness is only a small part of her monumental story. She hopes that by sharing her journey, she can inspire others facing similar obstacles.
Diagnosed in December 2022, stiff-person syndrome has forced Dion to cancel her remaining shows indefinitely. The condition causes stiff muscles and severe spasms, affecting her ability to perform. However, Dion remains hopeful, emphasizing the importance of honesty about her physical and emotional struggles.
The documentary, directed by Irene Taylor, features archival footage of Dion’s career, as well as personal moments with her family and pets. It highlights her love for her family, friends, and music, showing both her suffering and her joy.
Dion’s openness about her condition aims to provide support to others and maintain her connection with her fans. She recently appeared at the Grammy Awards to present the Album of the Year award to Taylor Swift, but has largely stayed out of the public eye.
“This movie is my love letter to each of you,” Dion said to a standing ovation at the premiere. “And I hope to see you all again very soon.”
