Austria edged a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Netherlands in Berlin to win Group D at Euro 2024. Ralf Rangnick’s well-organized team showed great resilience, twice coming from behind before Marcel Sabitzer scored the decisive goal 10 minutes from time.
Austria took an early lead when Donyell Malen diverted Alexander Prass’ cross into his own net. The Netherlands responded with Cody Gakpo equalizing early in the second half. However, Austria quickly regained the lead through Romano Schmid, whose header deflected off Stefan de Vrij.
Memphis Depay equalized again for the Netherlands, but the goal was initially disallowed for handball. After a VAR review, the decision was overturned, and the goal stood. Just five minutes later, Sabitzer scored the winner, finishing from a tight angle after being set up by Christoph Baumgartner.
Despite a late disallowed goal for Austria and a missed opportunity from Wout Weghorst, Austria held on to secure victory and top the group, while the Netherlands advanced as one of the best third-placed teams. This win highlights Austria’s potential as a dark horse in the tournament, showing strong character and tactical discipline under Rangnick’s guidance.
