Brazil began their Copa America campaign with a frustrating goalless draw against Costa Rica in Los Angeles. Despite dominating possession with 74% and taking 19 shots, the nine-time champions could not find the back of the net in their Group D opener.
Marquinhos had a goal disallowed by VAR in the 30th minute for offside after tapping in a free-kick from Raphinha. Coach Dorival Jr brought on youngsters Endrick and Savio in hopes of a breakthrough, but the goal never came. Lucas Paqueta hit the woodwork after an hour and missed two late chances.
“We played a great game, we fought until the end,” Paqueta said. “I had three chances myself. We were frustrated not to win, but we leave with confidence. We played our game; we have to improve our finishing, myself in particular, so that we can win.”
Costa Rica coach Gustavo Alfaro likened his team’s underdog status to a film, saying, “We were Bruce Willis in ‘The Sixth Sense,’ where the only one that did not know he was dead was him. Well, everyone thought we were dead before the movie started in our case.”
Colombia Takes Early Lead in Group D
In contrast, Colombia took the early lead in Group D with a 2-1 win over Paraguay, thanks to an impressive performance by James Rodriguez. The 32-year-old assisted both goals, first with a pinpoint cross for Daniel Munoz in the 32nd minute, and then with a free-kick that Jefferson Lerma glanced in just before halftime.
Paraguay’s Julio Enciso pulled one back in the 69th minute with an angled volley, but Colombia held on for the win. Colombia will play Costa Rica next, while Brazil faces Paraguay on Saturday.
Brazil’s Lackluster Performance Raises Questions
Brazil’s performance against Costa Rica was widely criticized. The team showed a lack of identity, leadership, and desire on the pitch. Despite some questionable VAR decisions, Brazil’s overall play was deemed inadequate for a tournament favorite. Neither Vinicius Jr nor Rodrygo managed a shot on target, highlighting the team’s offensive struggles.
Dorival Junior, Brazil’s newly-appointed coach, will need to address these issues quickly as the team prepares for their next match against Paraguay. The draw against Costa Rica exposed many of Brazil’s flaws, putting their Copa America hopes at risk.
