Germany’s Niclas Fullkrug salvaged a 1-1 draw with a stoppage-time header, ensuring Germany advances to the Euro 2024 knockout stages as Group A winners. Switzerland, finishing second, also progresses to the last 16.
Germany dominated early possession but struggled to penetrate Switzerland’s disciplined defense. In the 17th minute, Robert Andrich’s goal for Germany was disallowed by VAR due to a foul by Jamal Musiala. Switzerland took the lead in the 28th minute when Dan Ndoye volleyed in a cross from Remo Freuler. Despite persistent pressure from Germany, Switzerland maintained their lead until stoppage time, when David Raum’s cross found Fullkrug, who headed in the equalizer.
The match highlighted areas Germany needs to address, including their midfield play and the consideration of a more traditional center-forward. Switzerland’s defense was well-organized, making it challenging for Germany to create clear chances. Both teams had goals disallowed by VAR interventions.
Manuel Akanji of Switzerland delivered an exceptional defensive performance, covering spaces and leading the backline. Julian Nagelsmann, Germany’s coach, acknowledged the hard-fought point, stating, “At the end, I think this point is well deserved. We risked a lot, as we could have conceded a second goal.” Murat Yakin, Switzerland’s coach, expressed pride in his team’s performance despite the draw, noting, “There was a lot of pressure from the Germans so we can say we take the draw.”
Germany will face the team that finishes second in England’s group in the knockout stages, while Switzerland remains a formidable opponent, having shown strong form under coach Murat Yakin.
